For those of you who attended any of the many events associated with the Armed Forces Day Celebration this past weekend, I know you would agree with me when I say, “I am so proud to live in the City of Torrance.” This experience truly instills a respect for country and demonstrates appreciation for the sacrifices the men and women of the armed forces have made to secure our freedoms.

The City of Torrance is one of the few cities to host an Armed Forces Day celebration with the Torrance Armed Forces Day Parade as a highlight. The Parade has the distinction of being the nation’s longest running military parade sponsored by any city.

This rich tradition began in 1960; Mayor Al Isen, with the help of the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce, organized the first parade as a tribute to friends and fellow American who had served in the Armed Forces.

This year, the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce hosted an Armed Forces 5K Run/Walk that kicked off at 8:00 a.m. with an inspirational welcome from Rear Admiral Carola List, Director of Operational Logistics, United States Coast Guard. A highlight for many participants was the 5K started with the firing of a cannon.

As I walked through the expo, it was evident that everyone was enjoying themselves. Runners/walkers included all age groups, many dressed in red, white, and blue and carrying American flags. Several military branches participated in the 5K which added to the significance of the event.

The Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce was pleased to host this event and looks forward to next year. There are many businesses and organizations that made this year’s Armed Forces 5K Run/Walk a reality. I would like to take an opportunity to express our appreciation to: the City of Torrance Police Department, UCLA Health, Village Runner, Del Amo Fashion Center, California Water Services, Fastsigns, Aura Seating, Bachem Americas, Express Employment Professionals, Kinecta Federal Credit Union, Moog, and Alpha Real Estate. A special thank you to Lieutenant Lauren Giancola for singing the National Anthem before the start of the race.
