In this Out and About column, I chose to feature a business that often benefits from New Year’s resolutions. A New Year’s resolution is a tradition, most common in the Western World but also found in the Eastern World, in which a person resolves to continue good practices, change an undesired trait or behavior, accomplish a personal goal, or otherwise improve their life at the start of a new year.
Individuals often make resolutions to get in better shape, to lose weight or to take a more positive approach to things. In speaking with Dan Hawkins, owner of 9Round, I learned so much in the 45-minute time we spent together.
As a co-director of Leadership Torrance, I had the opportunity to work with Dan over the past several years. It was clear that the positive approach that he led and inspired by in Leadership Torrance were the same characteristics in which he runs his business.
“Life is all about making the world a better place. The best way to improve the world is to become the best version of yourself, develop your unique gifts, align yourself with groups that share your values and purpose, and leverage your strengths within those groups to produce the maximum impact on the areas that matter to you. Your best self begins with your healthiest self,” commented Dan.
In September of 2014, Dan opened 9Round Torrance. 9Round offers a kickboxing-themed fitness program that incorporates a 30-minute workout of functional, interval, cardiovascular, and circuit training regimens with nice workout stations. The program boosts endurance, promotes heart health, releases endorphins, relieves stress, burns calories, improves sleep, sweats out toxins, and builds lean muscle.
“Torrance has been a great community in which to own a business. There is such a sense of community with wonderful family values. During the pandemic, we had an amazing opportunity to sit down with ourselves, and work on being better and who we wanted to be, as life is not about what happens, but how we react. I have had opportunities to collaborate with so many people who wanted to improve their lives in a positive way”, explained Dan.
