The Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce Foundation is launching a new program this fall designed to influence and inspire the future leaders of our community. The “Junior Leadership Torrance” [JLT] program has been modeled after the format of the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce’s highly-regarded Leadership Torrance program.

Approximately 30 participants will be selected by Torrance Unified School District faculty based on their leadership potential, specifically targeting students who have displayed an aptitude for the professional processes of the business world. Selected sophomores from Torrance area high schools will participate in a series of activities and excursions aimed at sharpening their leadership skills and identifying career path opportunities in corporate, non-profit and municipal arenas.

Directors Leslie Cortez, Assistant Fire Chief Bill Samp and Vice Chair Foundation, Jennifer Olvera, will lead this program which will engage sophomore students from the Torrance Unified School District and Ambassador High School. “I am excited to lead this new program that has been designed to familiarize young leaders with the various elements that form a strong and dynamic community. Junior Leadership Torrance will help students develop leadership skills and foster their interest in volunteer community service.  I am most excited about guiding the participants through the day in the life of Torrance-past, present and future.  Students will learn key fundamentals of the City and County, as well as state government,” explained Cortez.

Assistant Chief and Fire Marshal for the Torrance Fire Department, Bill Samp, is co-directing the JLT program and sees the value in affording our local high school students with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity through the program. “Junior Leadership Torrance provides a student an unique opportunity to take the next step in self-evaluation, be surrounded by other promising leaders, and gain insights into the application of leadership in real world organizations in our community,” stated Samp.

This new program will be featured at Summer Fest on August 20th.  Summer Fest is an event that will be held in front of the Depot Restaurant in Downtown Torrance. Guests will be provided a delectable BBQ buffet by Chef, a hosted beer, wine and martini bar, a silent auction, and live music.  All donations are tax deductible; the TACC Foundation is a 501(c) 3 organization.  For information, please contact (310) 540-5858 or reserve tickets at www.torrancechamber.com/summerfest.

Whether you choose to purchase tickets/tables to Summer Fest, sponsor the event or donate to the silent auction, your support of the Junior Leadership Torrance program will allow the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce Foundation to continue its work in positively impacting the future of Los Angeles’ workforce; thereby improving the long-term economic vitality of our region.
