Aram Chaparyan, Torrance City Manager, announced yesterday the appointment of Robert Dunn as the City’s new Chief of Police effective September 14th.
Chief Dunn brings 25 years of distinguished law enforcement experience and leadership, including his role as Assistant Chief since 2023. His focus on building strong leadership teams and fostering meaningful community partnerships makes him the right leader to take the Torrance Police Department to the next level. I have full confidence in Chief Dunn’s vision to strengthen the bonds between our offices, residents, and businesses we serve.
Chief Dunn began his career with the Anaheim Police Department as a Police Explorer in 1993 and sworn in as an office in 2001. Over the years, he’s served in a wide range of assignments, including Explorer Advisor, Recruitment Team Member, Graffiti Task Force Investigator, Community Policing Officer, and Training Officer. He was promoted to Sergeant in 2008, where he supervised the Canine Unit and later served as the Anaheim Police Department’s Public Safety Information Officer, overseeing critical communications for both the Police and Fire Departments.
Promoted to Lieutenant in 2013, Chief Dunn continued his service as a Watch Commander, Executive Officer, and Commander of several divisions including Gang Intervention, Youth Services, District Command, and Professional Standards.
In 2018, he joined the Fullerton Police Department as Captain, overseeing the Support Services Division which included Investigations, Forensic Services, Community Services, City Jail Facility, along with the Department’s civilian and professional staff. Later that year, he was appointed Acting Chief, and in 2019, he was named Fullerton’s 18th Chief of Police. Chief Dunn holds a Bachelor’s Degree from California State University, Long Beach, and a Master’s Degree in Education from Boise State University.
