Carol Schreiner is an individual who lights up a room with her smile and enthusiastic personality, but in this case it is a playing field that she truly illuminates. As Founder & CEO of Superhero Sports Camp, Carol explains that Superhero Sports Camp is designed to build friendships, teamwork, character and fun. Students of all ages are welcome, with and without disabilities.
“There are a million camps for typical students in the United States, but there are few that combine to create a positive atmosphere for both typical and special needs. Superhero Sports Camp allows all levels an open playing field and creates a welcoming place to have fun and learn from each other,” explained Schreiner.
Growing up, Carol loved Physical Education [PE] classes and has played softball all her life. She learned, at an early age, that wearing a suit and nylons, working 9 to 5 wasn’t for her. Carol followed her passion and earned a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and Master’s Degree in Education. She is a credentialed PE/Adaptive PE teacher and has been employed with the Torrance Unified School District for the past 20 years.
“Research shows brain activity is improved with short bursts of physical activity. Superhero Sports Camp is designed to incorporate this type of movement while building gross motor skills; kicking, catching and throwing, in a small group sports setting and then applying those skills in games with their peers,” stated Schreiner.
At camp, participants will gain leadership skills and friendships that will last a lifetime, develop character building within social interactions, experience playing a variety of sports in a small setting and experience opportunities to improve self confidence. “Camp also provides the typically developing child the opportunity to have fun and learn from those with special needs. It is magical to see the amazing amount of cheering that goes on for each other,” said Schreiner.
