This week I had the opportunity to visit Zymurgy Brew Works and Tasting Room with the Chamber’s HYPE program. HYPE, Helping Young Professionals Excel, is a new monthly program offered to young professional chamber members.
We were enthusiastically greeted by owner Bill Baker. And, when I say enthusiastically greeted, I do mean that. It is evident that Bill is passionate about Zymurgy Brew Works and Tasting Room. But, what is also evident is that Bill is passionate about his job as principal of Victor Elementary School, the largest by enrollment and the most diverse school in Torrance Unified School District.
“I taught school for many a year and then became a principal. Education is a wonderful career and a profession. About four years ago, I began exploring the options of owning my own business and opened Zymurgy. It has been a bit challenging at times to be so engaged in two things I am very passionate about, but I have an awesome support system at Zymurgy and at Victor,” explained Baker. Sam O’Cumin, Assistant Brewer/Tasting Room Manager, stated Baker provides employees with tools and then allows them the opportunity to do their job. “We share victories and we share defeats.”
Zymurgy Brew Works and Tasting Room is a Nano-brewery offering excellent house beer on tap. They are LA’s only “Do It Yourself” craft brewery that caters to people who want to brew their very own craft beer for personal consumption. “We provide our clients all the means – recipe, ingredients, equipment and guidance – to manufacture their very own custom craft beer using all grain recipes,” commented Baker. Zymurgy also opens its doors to corporate and team building events, networking meetings and special occasions and parties. Zymurgy is derived from the word, Zye-mur-jee, which is a noun meaning a branch of applied chemistry that deals with fermentation processes, as in brewing. If I were to use one word to describe Bill Baker, other than passionate, it would be “driven”. He is a person motivated by his work and thirst for success.
