If you have traveled to an unfamiliar destination with the intention of experiencing as much as possible, you know how invaluable the knowledge of a local can be. There is not a better resource, and their suggestions can make the difference between a ho-hum trip and a truly memorable one.

I recently visited the new California Welcome Center located in the Del Amo Fashion Center. Greeted by Debbie Hays, Sales and Community Relations for Discover Torrance, I was provided an in-depth explanation of what the California Welcome Center means to Torrance, as well as a tour of the space.

The most noticeable feature is the transformation of the Del Amo Fashion Information Center into the California Welcome Center.  “We have worked with many Torrance and South Bay businesses in the setup of the booth including graphic designers, lock and key, and engravers.  Additionally, we are selling merchandise from local businesses,” explained Hays.

It is the mission of each of the California Welcome Centers scattered throughout the state to enable all visitors to have the best experience possible.  Each one is staffed with personal travel concierges, knowledgeable experts who are ready to provide information that will enhance and enrich a visit no matter what a visitor’s focus is—the arts, local culture, family activities, sports, the great outdoors, shopping, or all the above.

“We will provide advice on where to eat, where to stay, and how to get there. We offer complimentary maps and brochures on local attractions, state and national parks in the area, and things to see and do.  Colorful postcards with photos and scenes from Torrance are also available,” added Hays.

In addition to Hays, the California Welcome Center is staffed with five part-time employees, all remarkably familiar with Torrance and the surrounding area. Additionally, Chip and Gidget, two mannequins in the middle of the Center, are smartly dressed as models with apparel items that is being sold.

The California Welcome Center Torrance, complete with interactive kiosks is open from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. Monday to Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. on Sundays.  The next time you are in the Del Amo Fashion Center or you are planning an adventure, please take the time to stop by and say hello to the those working the booth.  The California Welcome Center is truly a wonderful addition to the City of Torrance.
