[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text width=”1/1″ el_position=”first last”]Last Friday’s State of the Region 2015 address at the DoubleTree by Hilton afforded the community an opportunity to hear from Congressman Ted Lieu about matters affecting the region. Lieu, who opened his speech with an anecdote that he had gone through the Chamber’s Leadership Torrance program in 1999, was newly appointed to Congress as a result of the November 4th election. His term began this month.

“I am living proof that if you go through the Leadership Torrance program, you can become a Congressman,” Lieu said playfully.

Congressman Lieu began by speaking about his experience thus far as a freshman Congressman, providing an inside glimpse into the world of politics in Washington.

“One thing I have found interesting is that many great bills pass legislation that the public never really hears about,” Lieu said. “The bills that cause upheaval are normally the ones that catch the public ear, simply because that is how the media operates.”

He also went into detail about California’s revival following the recession, and how the state has bounced back to become the eighth largest economy in the world, close on par with Russia. Lieu credited education with being a big part of this, noting how California is home to many large industries that require higher education.

Full coverage on the Torrance Chamber-hosted State of the Region 2015 address can be found in this article by the Daily Breeze and/or by watching the video from Torrance CitiCABLE above.

All past Chairmen of the Board for the Torrance Chamber were invited to the event, and the Chamber hosted a special Past Chairs Reception for them during the hour prior to the start of the event. Over a dozen past chairs attended, and were appreciative of the opportunity to remain current with the Chamber and the community.
